On 25 November, the Working Group on Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination (GTG) organized a webinar on violence in Language, entitled “Violence in Language: The Power of Words,” to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

This session was attended by Miriam Jerade, a specialist in continental language philosophy with a political focus, who gave us a keynote speech on violence in language, where we were able to understand that communication is much more than the words we outline. It was also highlighted that violence not only involves how we communicate but the generalizations we use, as well as how we express ourselves pejoratively about a gender.

Thus, with an audience of more than 300 people from different countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, the official launch of the Gender Inclusion and Diversity Observatory (GID) of the OLACEFS GTG was held. The GID Observatory platform, available on the GTG microsite, contains the laws of the OLACEFS countries on gender, inclusion, and diversity issues, the COVID-19 survey, and the progress of the Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination Policy, among other initiatives and projects.

Along these lines, the Participatory Guide on the Use of Neutral Language of OLACEFS  was also launched. Following the presentation of the working document at the 31st General Assembly of OLACEFS, the GTG, in its capacity as GID Observatory, updated the document and held a final participatory session with all the members of the Working Group to present an instrument that collected all the perceptions and ideas of the Organization’s staff members.
